Some of the technology learning programs that Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade will use:
Dance Mat Typing, an introduction to touch typing for children aged 7 - 11 years.
Each of the 4 levels are divided into 3 stages. Begin at Level 1 and build up your skills gradually through to
Level 4.
ABCya.com is the leader in free educational kids computer games and activities for elementary students to learn on the web. All children's educational computer activities were created or approved by certified school teachers. All educational games are free and are modeled from primary grade lessons and enhanced to provide an interactive way for children to learn. It is an excellent site for young learners to practice their typing and letter identification on the keyboard. Fun animated characters encourage and guide students through typing their ABC's, numbers, upper case letters, punctuation and finally sentences. It also teaches listening, reading comprehension, rhyming, phonics, vocabulary, spelling, music, art, science, math, comparing & contrasting and critical thinking skills.
Grade level lessons incorporate areas such as math and language arts while introducing basic computer skills. Fun children's Holiday activities are available in grade level sections!

Introduction - Rules of the Computer Lab - Computer Parts Names (1 session)
Introduction to the computer lab teacher, discuss what we will do in the lab. Talk about rules of the computer lab, talk about how to sit in the chairs, raising hand to go to the bathroom, taking a buddy with you to the bathroom, washing hands before returning from bathroom. Discuss keeping hands to oneself, no running in the lab, keeping fingers out of mouth and nose. Following the same rules as in the regular classroom . Briefly review the names of the main computer parts such as monitor, keyboard, mouse, CPU.
October
Dance Mat Typing First Grade Introduction (1-2 sessions) Use of this program is ongoing and review is given as needed. Demonstrate how to open the program, how to enter the students' name, usage of backspace to fix mistakes, and basics of game play. Also demonstrate how to exit the game.
October - November
Dance Mat Typing. Practice multiple sessions through
November. Dance Mat Typing - Introduce / review the program and characters Shelby and Max. Demonstrate how to enter the students' name, use of backspace to fix mistakes. Explain and demo how to type the alphabet using both hands, using the red keys for left hand and purple keys for the right hand. Students should work towards typing through all sections to earn completion certificates consistently. Emphasize typing with both hands, walk around class during sessions and reinforce two hand typing with gentle reminders.
Microsoft Word (multiple sessions)Session 1 -Review the program and review it's usage for word processing. Review how to open and close the program. Demonstrate backspace, enter, shift undo keys. Write several sentences using spelling words, change font size, font style and add shapes. Children learn to print and save documents.
Session 2- Write Happy Thanksgiving letter utilizing font size and style changes. Add shapes / clip art and page border. Print and save.
DecemberMicrosoft Word (1-3) sessions. Winter Break "Happy Holidays" letter to family.Session 1 Write on the topic "Our Neighborhood at Work". Print.
Session 2 - Write several sentences using spelling words, change font size, font style and add shapes. Print and save.
Session3- Write Happy Holiday letter utilizing font size and style changes. Add shapes / clip art and page border. Print and save.

Session 2 February - Watch journeys videos collected for Open Court weather unit. Introduce media player program interface. Explain how to navigate to media files on the server or My Videos folder as needed. Demonstrate play / pause / stop / volume / full screen controls. Explain media player volume and system volume controls.
Microsoft Power Point (1 session combined with session 1 weather videos above)January Show Lightning Power Point show created for Open Court weather unit. Introduce program interface. Explain how to navigate to power point file(s). Watch this slide show in the same session as the weather videos.
Type to Learn (4-5) sessionsType to Learn - Introduce login and interface. Discuss proper finger placement on the home position. Demonstrate warm up exercise and first lesson. Discuss typing accuracy measurements and progress bar. Utilize projector and document camera if possible to project keyboard and proper finger placement while typing. Walk around class during typing session to reinforce two hand typing and finger placement. Work towards completion of lessons 1 and 2.

MarchMicrosoft Word (4-5 sessions)Open Court Keep Trying Unit - 1) Itsy Bitsy Spider 2) The Kite 3) Way of an Ant 4) Fox and Grapes 5) Hare and Tortoise. Students will practice writing, inserting clip art, formatting text and printing and saving in each session.
AprilPowerPoint (1-2 sessions)Frog Lifecycle - Create a single slide showing the life cycle of a frog. Eggs > tadpole > tadpole with legs > froglet > adult frog. Print out for coloring. Save work and continue on session 2 as necessary.
Microsoft Word (2 sessions)Session 1- Happy Spring Break letter. Utilize font size, font style formatting to fit entire page, add clip art, page borders. Print and save.
Session 2- Matthew and Tilly punctuation practice. Print and save.

Pivot (2-3) sessionsSession 1 - Introduce program interface. Demonstrate basic animation movements using the basic stick figure. How to add a copy of a figure and color it.
Session 2 - Review interface. Demonstrate buttons for changing stick size, flipping, Slowing down action for more realism.
Session 3 - How to add extra figures; girl, skateboards, ramps, vehicles, etc. How to save files.
Kid Pix (1) sessionKidPix - How to use the recording feature to narrate a picture. Have the kids draw a picture of their family and then describe the members using a microphone. Save.
