Keyboarding Practice materials Grades 3rd, 4th and 5th
Students, parents and teachers need to understand how important PRACTICE is to developing keyboarding skill. Just like learning to play an instrument or master any skill, practice is key. To become proficient at keyboarding takes daily practice.
Solid Technique - Grade 3 is the year we want to ensure that students complete all the Keyboard lessons to help them understand and use proper keyboarding technique. In most elementary settings, after the initial keyboarding instruction is completed students are exposed to keyboarding in the computer lab thirty minutes each day for twenty days, learning how to properly use the computer keyboard.
Practice does not have to be for a long period of time. In fact, 10 minutes of keyboarding 4 nights per week will greatly improve a student's keyboarding skill. Keyboarding practice is most productive when a student uses correct technique. Students have learned (or will learn in 3rd grade) the keys on the keyboard and which fingers are responsible for typing those keys. They need to practice every day typing without looking at their keyboard so they are able to key by touch.
Students can practice their keyboarding while keying their spelling words, composing at the keyboard, completing assignments, typing from a book or doing any of the practices below. Please encourage your child to practice and do their best so that they may be successful.
Keyboarding Practice Drills -a variety of drills covering numerous topics. Use these drills after instruction is completed and students know the alphabetic keys by touch. Drills use a fillable form format. Key the word in the blank, then tab to the next word. Drills can be used over and over again for practice. Have fun!
